Kokopelli, the bowed-back flute player of Native American cultures, is said to be variously a fertility deity, a trickster god and a symbol of the sprit of music. I first encountered the ubiquitous Kokopelli while living in Taos, New Mexico. In August of 1998 I went up the mountain to Taos Ski Valley to attend an intimate and fantastic concert by Herbie Mann, flautist-extraordinaire. Herbie Mann lived, at the time, in or near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and to me, embodied the spirit of music; a modern day Kokopelli. Indeed he identified with the symbol naming his recording label Kokopelli Records. I wrote Kokopelli for Herbie Mann in the repeating poetic form of the pantoum and accompanied it with a single Kokopelli image I created (the same image reproduced here). Herbie Mann (Herbert Jay Solomon) passed away July 1, 2003.
