Description
Note 1: Net proceeds from the sale of this poster will be donated to the Dallas Police Museum. The department is developing the Dallas Police Museum to honor all the men and women, past, present and future of the Dallas Police Department.
Note 2: On what would have been Officer Tippit's 90th birthday (September 18) his family met the public at The Sixth Floor Museum At Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas. Moderated by longtime journalist and writer Hugh Aynesworth, Officer Tippit's widow, Marie and two of this three children: Brenda and Curtis, discussed their memories of Officer Tippit as police officer, husband and father. (The eldest son, Allan, passed away four months ago.) Many illuminating, heartwarming and heartbreaking details were shared with the audience. Although I have known, since my time on the department, that Officer Tippit was known only by his initials, I had seen his initials with periods, thousands of times and thus thought periods were supposed to be used with his initials. Mrs Tippit, Marie, often during the evening, referred to her husband as "J", using only his first initial. Later his son, Curtis, shared that his father's name came from a book ("JD Of The Mountain" or Mountains read and enjoyed by his grandfather). Officer Tippit's father, who also only had initials for a 'first name', named his son JD, with no periods. When I showed Curtis this poster (which his mother had already approved with no decent) I explained I had not known his family used no periods in his father's name/initials. I said I would change the poster to reflect the family use of his father's name/initials if that is something he would like me to do. Curtis said, "Yes". If you have seen or have purchased this poster and it has "J.D." you have the edition prior to 9.18.14. All subsequent posters will show "Officer J D Tippit" sans initials. DPD Officer J.D. Tippit badge #848 holds a place of honor and remembrance. Shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit stopped a man in the nearby Oak Cliff section of Dallas who fit the description of the man wanted for shooting President Kennedy. Upon approaching the man, later identified as Lee Harvey Oswald, to effect his detention and arrest, Officer Tippit was shot several times by Oswald who then shot Tippit a final time, in the head. Oswald then fled. Thanks to witnesses Oswald was located in the Texas Theater. Oswald attempted to shoot the officers who disarmed and arrested him. Officer J.D. Tippit was a Paratrooper with the 17th Airborne Division and combat veteran of World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in Europe. The bust of Tippit was created by Dallas welder, Louis B. Lee.
