Description
State Fair of Texas, Esplanade Statue: Texas; sculpted by L.T. Stevens
In 1936 the City of Dallas won the right to build and permanently host The Great State Fair of Texas for the Texas Centennial. One of the central elements the Esplanade with its 700-foot long reflecting pool. Flanked by the Centennial building on the north and the Automobile building on the south are female statues representing the six flags that flew over Texas. Alongside the Centennial building and facing the pool are three statues sculpted by Lawrence Tenney Stevens representing Texas, the Confederacy, and Spain. Alongside the Automobile building and facing the pool are the three statues sculpted by Raoul Josett representing Mexico, France, and the United States.
The Stevens statues are the ones I have photographed the most as they almost always have favorable sunlight. I have gone to the fairgrounds at different times of the year hoping that at some point in the year the sun would favor the Josett statues on the south side of the reflecting pool, to no avail. After recent renovations the original Art Deco paint details of the alcoves behind the statues have been refreshed and they are lighted at night making spectacular night shots possible.
These photographs were taken 1999 and used, via photoshop enhancement, to portray these women of Texas in a dramatic new light.
