Description
This photograph was taken prior to the full restoration of the statue and mural. The sculpture was designed by Raoul Josett and Jose Martin in 1935 to adorn the1910 era building first used as a coliseum and given its Art Deco look for its use during the Centennial as the administration hall. Over time the building fell in to disuse until it was revived in 1994 as the Womens Museum and further revived in 2000 to display exhibits reflecting the accomplishment of American women. The Spirit of the Centennial sculpture stands in front of mural by Carlo Ciampaglia depicting the Texas century: 1836-1936. Due to funding shortages the Museum closed in 2010 and renamed the Womens building.
