After a fierce WWII battle on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima Marines victoriously raised an American flag on Mount Suribachi. A second, larger flag was brought up to replace the smaller one. Photographer Joe Rosenthal took the unforgettable image, of the second flag raising, for which he later received the Pulitzer Prize for Photography. Marines: Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Harold Keller, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Pfc. Harold Schultz, Pfc. Franklin Sousley and Sgt. Michael Strank were identified by the Corps in 2019 as the six men who raised the second flag. The USMC was formed as two battalions and were called the Continental Marines. The Corps marks this date 10 November 1775 as their birthday. Happy Birthday Marines! NOTE 1: In this image I am using a modern day flag rather than the "Old 48" which would have been the flag raised in 1945. NOTE 2: For years other men were named as the flag raisers. Recently additional photographic evidence was scrutinized and the record has been corrected.
