Description
The second anniversary of 'poet laureate to the world', Rod McKuen's death on January 29th had me thinking of his words that millions, around the world, have read, heard and loved. I wanted to do a subdued by heartfelt tribute poster. I kept remembering one of his beloved poems, about his lost cat, Sloopy. I pictured the scene his words drew and imagined Rod posting a note on a public space, like a utility pole. One that had been used to communicate hundreds of previous messages for: work, things to buy or sell, and to notify the neighborhood of lost people and pets. Though the space is "in the public" it does not belong to the public and thus like thousands of other spaces warning "Post NO BULLS", an abbreviated form of "Post No Bulletins". I could imagine Rod McKuen seeing the irony and posting a note: "No Bull, Lost Cat - Name Sloopy, Call Rod M." The old yellowed, water stained note grounds the viewer to the main image that is stapled to the pole, as is the lavender note which also leads the viewers eye outside the image to the border with the poet's three most famous books of poetry: Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows, Listen To The Warm, and Lonesome Cities.
