Description
recreation of a Buster Brown send-up poster from the 60s
Buster Brown Shoes. Along with Red Goose Shoes were constantly promoted in newspapers, magazines, comic books as well as kid shows on the new-fangled TV of the 50s. The Buster Brown ad or commercial consisted of a sailor boy and his dog looking up at you from inside a shoe. The sailor boy would say: “I’m Buster Brown, I live in a shoe. That’s my dog Tige and he lives in here too!” The phrase was so often repeated we all knew it by heart.
One afternoon in the mid-60s I walked into a college haberdashery in downtown Stillwater, home of Oklahoma State University. I needed a shirt and a pair of slacks. I took them into the changing room to try them on. Rather than a curtain, the room had swinging doors. I hung up the shirt and pants and turned to face the mirror. I saw a familiar image in the mirror behind me. I did an about face and saw a Buster Brown poster. My eyes scanned the image and familiar phrase… then I broke out into hysterics when I read the ‘changed’ famous last words. I have giggled and laughed over that poster for years. I’ve told about that moment many times… and even for ‘kids of a certain age’ the telling often devolved into my saying: “I guess you had to be there.” Now here’s my recreation of that poster and perhaps, if you are one of those “kids of a certain age’ it will give you a chuckle or two. Or, perhaps, you 'still' had to be there. (grin)
