Description
The Dallas Police Memorial in downtown Dallas honors those officer killed in the line of duty. There badge number are 'cut' out of the overhead allowing the sun to project that shining number onto the city's street below. Updated October 4, 2018.
Loosing buddies in battle as a soldier or "In The Line of Duty" as a police officer is a bitter severing of what was an unbreakable bond. That loss remains unresolved regardless of the passage of time. Soldiers and cops are citizens first... they become soldiers or cops, they are chosen from among you to serve you. To do the job of protecting you against those who would choose to harm you or your family. You ask them to do this job, at the risk of their own lives, because you are either unable or unwilling to put your own life on the line to protect the public in general, yourself or your loved ones. When they die serving you, they deserve your reverence for the job they did on your behalf and your honor for the life they lived and the family they leave behind.
This poem was written to honor the memory of my fallen brothers and sister in law enforcement and to remind citizens of their obligation to honor the job and the memory of your fallen officers. For they are you, an ordinary citizen, who becomes extraordinary because you chose them to represent you as a police officer.

As architect of record Oglesby Greene brought together multiple entities; the Foundation, the City, the designers, the contractor and his craftsmen to realize a significant built memorial. Oglesby-Greene participated in design development with designers Ed Baum and John Maruszczak and executed the contract documents and construction administration.
On a two-acre triangle of park land overlooking City Hall Plaza, a memorial has been built to recall the Dallas Police officers killed in the line of duty. A stainless steel construction emerges from the site like a figurative officer's shield and carries the badge numbers and names of police killed in the line of duty. One plane floats as an overhead bar while another follows the incline of the earth. The plane above casts a rectangular shadow across the broad asphalt steps, recalling the mourning bar worn on police badges when an officer is lost. Within this shadow the badge numbers of fallen officers are illuminated, projected by the rays of the sun. The removed stainless numerals, like reversed stencils, are mounted and given to the officers' families. The lower plane-borne by the earth and pavement fragments cut from Dallas streets carries the names and dates of the fallen officers, where they may be read and touched at close hand.
